4 hand massage vs regular massage: which hour to book

Two pairs of hands resting on a golden hourglass, illustrating 4 hand massage vs regular massage

Two sets of hands sounds like a luxury, and it is a little. But whether a 4 hand massage vs regular massage is the better booking depends less on budget than on what you want out of the hour. Here’s how the two compare at Happy Head, in plain numbers, so you can choose without guessing.

The short answer

Book a regular one-therapist massage when you want a particular area worked on in detail, or when you’d rather have a longer session. Book the 4-hand Swedish and deep tissue massage when you want your whole body covered in one hour, or you just want the “two people taking care of you” experience once in a while.

What actually happens in a 4-hand session

Two therapists work on you at the same time, using a mix of Swedish and deep tissue techniques. Sometimes one handles your upper body while the other works your lower body. Other times they mirror each other, so both sides of you get the same strokes together. The session is one hour.

A regular massage is one therapist, one set of hands, and a choice of length: 60 or 90 minutes on our Swedish and deep tissue menus. The therapist can spend as long as you like on a stiff neck or tired feet because there’s no second person covering the rest of you.

4 hand massage vs regular massage: the price math

This is where most people want clarity, so here are the prices listed on our services page:

  • Regular Swedish or deep tissue: $89 for 60 minutes, $125 for 90 minutes
  • 4-hand Swedish/deep tissue: $178 for one hour (you select 2 as the quantity when booking)

Put simply, the 4-hand hour costs twice the regular hour because two therapists are working for the whole 60 minutes. Compared with a 90-minute regular session at $125, you’re paying about $53 more for a shorter, more intensive session. If you care most about total minutes on the table, the 90-minute single session is the better value. If you care about coverage per minute, four hands wins.

Which one fits you? A quick checklist

A regular massage is probably the better pick if:

  • You have one problem area (shoulders from a desk, calves after a hike) and want it to get most of the time
  • You want to talk through pressure and focus with a single therapist as you go
  • You’d like 90 minutes rather than 60
  • You’re booking weekly or monthly and want to keep the cost sustainable

The 4-hand massage is probably the better pick if:

  • It’s a birthday, anniversary or “we survived this month” kind of treat
  • You tend to wish a 60-minute massage could cover both your back and your legs properly
  • You like the idea of an occasional splurge instead of a regular habit
  • You’re curious and want to try something new

Is a 4-hand massage better than a couples massage?

They’re different things. In a couples massage, two people each get their own therapist, side by side. In a 4-hand session, two therapists work on one person. If you’re booking with a partner or friend, couples is the one to pick. If you’re booking solo and want the double-therapist experience, it’s the 4-hand.

Practical tips before you book

The 4-hand massage is offered at all seven studios, including Downtown San Diego, Pacific Beach and Carlsbad. Because it needs two therapists free at once, it’s smart to book ahead online rather than count on a walk-in, especially on weekends. Same-day times can be available, and we’re open 10 AM to 9 PM daily.

Tell both therapists about your pressure preference at the start. With two sets of hands, “medium” can feel quite different from what you’re used to, and it’s easy to adjust in the first couple of minutes. If you have a health condition or are unsure whether massage is right for you, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health suggests talking with your health care provider first, and massage shouldn’t be used in place of seeing one about a medical problem.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 4-hand massage twice as good as a regular one?

Not necessarily. It covers more of your body at once, but a regular 90-minute session gives you more total time. “Better” depends on what you want from the hour.

How much does a 4-hand massage cost?

$178 for a one-hour session with two therapists, compared with $89 for a regular 60-minute Swedish or deep tissue massage.

Can I request a male or female therapist?

Yes, let us know in advance when you book so we can plan around it.

Do I need a reservation?

Walk-ins are welcome when therapists are free, but the 4-hand massage needs two therapists at the same time, so reserving is the safer route. Our FAQ covers the rest.
